Sorry for keeping you waiting!
Let’s start with the pricing function in our Navision for the topical subject of the new WCP price mechanism. The image embedded below is an illustration of variant factors in pricing formula of our Navision system. Basically, pricing formula will be executed manually at least once after we create a new item in Navision. It will take these conditions into its calculation, cost of DTW buy for basic price reference, announced DSSI FOB selling price for max price limitation, distinct destinations and methods for shipping surcharge, and the relative exchange rate of given currencies that we need.



From my point of view, I believe that, if we want to make it more stable and efficient in our system, then a fixed purchase price of local currency for SUBs will be the first and foremost. And that depends on whether there is a relatively static (maintained) exchange rate or not. A dynamic exchange rate will cause many complex problems to the whole system in many ways. So, it will be also very important for someone in responsibility to maintain a stable and reliable exchange rate table for all currencies.

Image embedded below illustrate the sketch of the pricing and order processing workflow in Navision. We should maintain a table of listed prices (just like what our Navision is doing right now) in different destinations, shipping methods and currencies.



These prices list in individual currency should be announced to the corresponding SUB for making use in purchase and quotation. Of course, it does not have to be done if we had combined our database together in the future.

All these above-mentioned are my personal experience and opinions on this subject. I will be at your command if there is any advice or instruction.

The flowchart covers exactly what we need to present as a workable WCP methodology.

The control and assessment of any changes in Forex or alteration of shipping surcharges will only be attempted once every three months and will not be continually fluctuating or the job is nearly impossible to do.

I will have an overall pricing assessment team making sure we remain commercially viable in the market and we will assess the margin retained for each area of the group form the base price. There may be occasions where commercial pressure overrules the WCP structure and we are forced to take spot price in USD and sell to major contracts with less group margin but I will sanction these type of exceptions personally.

What I would like to do is have you present this data to Henry Barrell and have him agree the mechanisms for the quarterly price book release and order processing in local currency from the subs.

I will set this up and then you can liaise with Henry. If there are any issues you or William are concerned about or do not agree with in the process then please come directly back to me and I will resolve.

Hi All,

Having had the chance to go through the entire mechanism with William and Gary I think we must simplify the freight rate per product group and make one group charge regardless of territory.

One we have the ECW in place in Holland all stocks will be shipped to that hub and since it is one of the lowest cost shipping destinations we can potentially make some savings to counteract any increase in shipping to Aus SA and Canada. That keeps the matrix very simple.

Basically we just set a price template in Navision to add back x% to DTW based on a vendor USD$ FOB price and add a variable margin per product to DSSI as dictated by market pricing. Once we have that $ base cost we add one group charge for sea and one for air and then apply quarterly Forex parameter to the currency card for each trading currency.

Gary has this fully on board and I think the changes in the Navision macro that Bernd has had written are very basic.

Once a quarter we follow a simple process for re-issuing WCP price book.....

1.) HQ finance team in UK determine three month Forex rates based on overall previous quarter gains and losses.

2.) Logistics group in Taiwan analyse and report overall losses and gains on shipping and adjust by product group accordingly

3.) Commercial group from three operating regions meets to determine what DSI retained margin will be based on market price pressure

4.) New WCP is issued to each country buyer and sales team 4 times per year via Taiwan operation.


The net effect is the group accountants now have simple FIFO pricing and no more exhaustive CoS adjustments at month end. Also unrealised Forex issues will no longer skew overheads in group reporting.

Hopefully that will allow the accountants to support and assist the GM's and MD's to run the business instead of dealing with endless Navision reporting variables based on stock and shipping prices that are continually changing.

Thanks for your mail.

As you know I have been working on looking at the freight calculation to get a more realistic freight charge so that we can finish with issuing supplement invoices to the subs to cover the under recovery of freight from the current system in place.
While his trip over the UK last week, Graham has asked that you and me work together and make sure that we have a smooth implementation of the new price list. If you find that you start getting questions from the subs, I can help you if needed in making sure they understand what we are trying to do.

I have gone through your template, and I agree with the logic and calculation for air freight as it is based on weight and volume of the product rather than the cost of the product.
I have assumed that the tab called surcharge comparison just shows few examples of how the calculation will work and will be applied to all products on the database. I think it’s excellent as it integrates the fact that some of the product have their weight recalculated based on their volume, this is one area where many of the surcharges have occurred in the past with what we had in place then, especially on screens.

How quickly do you think this can be implemented as ideally we would like it to be up and running by the 1st September 08.
The plan is as you aware to charge each subsidiary in their own currency, are you happy to use the currency module in Navision? We will send you on a quarterly basis the exchange rate that needs to be entered in the systems.

Hi Marie,

Yes, that tab of surcharge comparison demonstrated few examples of how the calculation of freight charge will run on our system. Though it is quite precise, it still needs some amendment on the details. I’ll keep testing and verifying with the real bills from K+N in this week. I will keep you informed as long as it has been confirmed or even reevaluated. Values of those two arguments might be revised, but the basic of calculating by integrating factors of weight and volume won’t be changed anyway.

As what you mentioned, the spare parts did not have the definite information of packing dimensions, and it would probably be terminated after the establishment of EWC and AWC, so we incline to us the previous scheme (x% of cost for SEA and y% for AIR) for temporary instead of extensive consumption on it.

We can optimistically look forward to implementing this framework onto Navision by the 1st September 08, but it had better have a buffer period for weeks or one more month to confirm everything is under our control. Navision is, without a doubt, a big monster after all.

I completely agree with you, all new prices implemented will have to be checked for a month or two against invoice from K+N so that we are confident the freight pricing is now realistic. Agree also with your point ref the spare parts.
