John Lennon uses the phrase "watching the wheels" to metaphorically refer to the meditative technique of watching the mind, a biological mechanism that is often desribed in such mechancial terms. The actual technique is called Vipassana, in which the meditator watches the bodily sensations come and go, the mental thoughts come and go, and the emotional moods come and go, and thereby realizes that he or she is the pure witnessing consciousness that reminas behind all of these comings and goings.

To sit in this context means to meditate, whether actually sitting in a full-lotus position or in any other posture, including standing, reclining, or walking.

A meditator is no longer riding on the merry-go-round of the external, material world, a/k/a the rat race or the worldly game.

He just had to let it go, meaning he had to let his illusions go, his ego go, his mind go. He had to let it be. He had to let existence be. He had to let existence exist and to let existence happen on its own accord, on its own infinite wisdom, and not according to his finite, limited knowlede.

He loves to watch the wheels roll because it is unsayable peace that passeth understanding, unconditional love, compassion, grace, truth, freedom, ecstatic bliss, among so much more.
