I often meet men who tell me that they forget things like keys and dates and times. Daily supplements of soy isoflavones could help boost a man’s mental function and memory, according to findings of a small study from Australia.

Men receiving daily supplements of the isoflavones performed significantly better in tests of their working memory, report scientists from the University of South Australia and the University of Adelaide in the British Journal of Nutrition.

Researchers, led by Peter Howe, recruited 34 healthy men to participate in their 12-week double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over trial. They were subsequently crossed-over to the other intervention for the following 6 weeks.

Researchers in France found that an extract found in different types of Melon may actually PREVENT obesity. The extract is a powerful antioxidant which may provide a whole host of benefits.

For the nutrition tip of the day, this week it was announced that obesity rates are continuing to increase. Although this data came out of the US, it means that Worldwide rates are increasing as well. The US is simply a cross section of the what's going on in the world.

Adult obesity rates increased in 23 U.S. states last year and did not fall in a single state, an annual survey released on July 1 found. Adult obesity rates now exceed 25% in 31 states, up from 28 states last year and 19 the year before that.

A review of 15 studies into the influence of soy proteins or isoflavones on male hormones has found no evidence of an estrogen-like effect.

Soy has garnered attention as a healthy source of protein, and has been linked to a multitude of health benefits, including protection from breast cancer, prostate cancer, menopausal symptoms and heart disease. But some studies have suggested that soy isoflavones could affect male testosterone levels, due to their similarity in chemical structure to estrogen, which means they bind to estrogen receptors and can exert estrogen-like effects.

Today's news shows that research continues to support the consumption of whole grains in the diet for healthy cholesterol.

When most grains like WHEAT are processed, they are filtered so that much of the nutrients are extracted. Even many vitamins and minerals are taken out to create an easily packed FLOUR. Often the fiber and nutrients are taken out, so now food producers are looking towards providing Whole Grain foods which are closer to the natural grain when it's first harvested.

A group in Italy showed that whole grains are good for controlling cholesterol levels when compared with Refined Grains, according to new findings published in Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases.

The study adds to the ever-growing body of science supporting the benefits of wholegrain consumption for heart health, which have already led the FDA to permit foods containing at least 51 percent whole grains by weight and are low in total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol to carry a health claim linking them to a reduced risk of heart disease and certain cancers.

At the end of the study, total and LDL cholesterol levels were 4.3 and 4.9 percent lower following consumption of the wholemeal diet, compared to the refined wheat diet, said the researchers.

Many of you have been writing me about Swine Flu. The important thing is to continue frequent handwashing and good hygiene. The recently declared the Virus H1N1 a "Pandemic" which means that it has spread to enough countries worldwide to define it as such.
很多人一直寫信問我有關豬流感的事情。重要的是持續經常性地洗手以及良好的衛生習慣。近來發佈的H1N1病毒,是一種「全國流行性」的病毒,意指已經散佈到全世界夠多的國家,方得此名。
The first global flu pandemic of the century was declared yesterday after the World Health Organisation held an emergency summit.The decision was taken after it was found the H1N1 virus was spreading in at least global two regions. Cases are on the increase in Australia, the UK, Japan and Chile.
本世紀第一個全球性流感,就在昨天的世界衛生組織所召開的警急會議中宣佈。這項決定是因H1N1病毒已經在至少兩個國家流行,澳洲、英國、日本及智利等國家的新型流感案例持續增加中。
The head of the World Health Organization, Dr Margaret Chan was quick to stress that it did not mean the virus was causing more deaths or had increased in severity. The pandemic, which originated in Mexico in April, is thought to have spread to 30,000 people, with 141 deaths so far recorded. The WHO has not recommended that any national borders be closed or that restrictions on the movement of people and goods are currently necessary.
世界衛生組織的負責人陳馮富珍博士隨即表示,這並不代表病毒已經造成過多的傷亡或嚴重地增加患者。於四月份在墨西哥開始的新型流感,據目前統計,已經有至少3萬人感染,全球死亡人數為141位。世衛組織目前並沒有發佈要求任何國家邊界關閉,或禁止人民和貨物進出往來的必要。
So please do not worry too much but make sure to practice good hygiene with frequent handwashing.
因此,請不要太過擔心,但必須確定養成良好衛生習慣,且要勤洗手。
