The Australian Commerce and Industry Office is concerned about Taiwan media reports that beef samples found to contain residues of banned beta-agonists were of Australian origin. Beta-agonists such as ractopamine and zilpaterol – used to stimulate weight gain and increase leanness in cattle – are not registered for use in cattle in Australia.

The Australian Commerce and Industry Office understands that these reports arise from testing of unpackaged processed meat at the point of sale rather than at the border, which makes determining the country of origin difficult. The Australian Commerce and Industry Office notes that suppliers have already apologised for mistaken identification of tested beef as Australian.

Australia is a safe and reliable supplier of beef products to Taiwan. The Australian Commerce and Industry Office hopes that any future allegations of contaminated beef will have their origin confirmed prior to the release of the information. The Australian Commerce and Industry Office is concerned that the good reputation of Australian beef may be affected by these unconfirmed and inaccurate media reports.

As ractopamine is not registered for use in beef in Australia, a Maximum Residue Limit for ractopamine in cattle has not been set. This means that any detection of ractopamine residues in beef is considered a violation.

Zilpaterol is not registered for use for any purpose in Australia. This includes use in beef, pork or any other meat or animal product. Any detection of zilpaterol in Australian beef would be a violation of Australian standards.

Residues of ractopamine, zilpaterol and other beta-agonists are routinely tested for by the Australian National Residue Survey as part of its Random Monitoring Program. Since 2003, over 300 beef samples have been tested each year for ractopamine and its conjugates, and there have been no detections in cattle to date. Australia has tested for zilpaterol in beef as part of its testing regime since 2008-09. Australia conducted over 300 tests for zilpaterol in beef each year for the last three years and there have been no positive detections.

澳大利亞商工辦事處非常關切近日台灣媒體報導澳洲牛肉驗出疑似有瘦肉精殘留。萊克多巴胺和齊帕特羅等瘦肉精, 是用來提高牛隻的重量及增加牛隻的瘦肉比例, 這些瘦肉精在澳洲都是未被允許使用的。

根據澳大利亞商工辦事處的了解, 這些報導是源自部份被驗出的抽樣是來自市面上販賣並沒有包裝的加工肉品, 而不是在進口時查驗到, 因此對於釐清產地來源是有困難的。澳大利亞商工辦事處指出, 進口商也已經對驗出的抽樣被誤認為澳洲牛肉致歉。

澳洲是提供台灣安全可靠的牛肉產品供應國, 澳大利亞商工辦事處希望未來任何有關問題牛肉的報導, 都能在訊息發佈前先釐清產地來源, 我們對未經證實或不正確的媒體報導因而影響到澳洲牛肉的良好聲譽感到關切。

由於澳洲並不允許萊克多巴胺於牛肉中使用, 因此澳洲並未訂定萊克多巴胺於牛肉中的最大殘留容許量, 這也表示若檢測到牛肉中含有萊克多巴胺殘留,都將是違法的。

齊帕特羅 (zilpaterol)不論基於任何用途, 在澳洲也並未允許使用, 這包括在牛肉, 豬肉等任何肉品或動物製品上。 如果在澳洲牛肉中檢測到齊帕特羅, 都是違反澳洲規定的。

澳洲國家殘留物調查小組定期針對瘦肉精包括萊克多巴胺和齊帕特羅等瘦肉精殘留抽驗。 自2003年以來, 每年抽樣超過三百件牛肉檢驗其萊克多巴胺和其他受體素的殘留, 截至目前未有牛隻被驗出。 自2008-09以來,澳洲每年抽樣超過三百件牛肉檢驗是否有齊帕特羅的殘留, 在過去三年裡也並未有任何不合格的紀錄。
